Drafting an Essay for Nonfiction Contest

Writer: Megan MadramootooMegan Madramootoo

"“Let me talk to you for a second.”

I immediately stopped what I was doing, my breath abruptly catching inside my throat. His usual deep and soothing voice was now foreign to me since I hadn’t heard much of it in the weeks following Isaiah’s death, and the sudden sound of it startled my insides."

So that's what I have so far for an essay I plan on submitting for a nonfiction writing contest. You know, sometimes it's so hard to choose what you're going to write about when it comes to submitting for contests. You want to be able to write about a subject that actually MATTERS to the editors, but at the same time you find yourself asking: Is it really about the specific subject matter, or is it really about how WELL I tell my story?? That question plagued me as I vacillated between two different essay starts, trying to figure out which one I was going to complete and then submit.

In essence, however, it's really just about your truth and your passion, and how smoothly you are able to bring the two together.

More details to come soon as I draft this work...
